I am glad to see many DP players in this forum use PIANOTEQ. Tell us your setup, tips, like and not likes.

Favorite instrument: Hamburg Steinway
Customization: Velocity Curve, Note-off Curve
Likes: The richness in timber, sympathetic resonance, auto recording

iternabe I'm going to try Pianoteq when I get home from traveling. I have a Mac and a Yamaha DGX-670, which only has a headphone port and a drive that seems to only take a USB storage device though. There's no regular line out so I haven't known how to get it connected to sound software for live play. I've been thinking I should have purchased a different digital piano. 😪 So anyway, I'm going to watch this thread and learn. Perhaps I can at least get my recordings on the digital to sound better. Thank you for starting this thread.

I think your keyboard has those “printer USB” cable port, which is similar to mine. I basically use a cord for that, and plug into my Mac/ iPad (with the aid of a USB/USB-C converter cable).

Version: 8.2 Pro
DP/Midi controller: Kawai VPC1
Platform: iPad Pro, iPhone (to play songs I hear on the spot by ear with my thumbs, for fun)
Favorite instrument: Steinway B, Steingraeber E
Customization: Kawai Editor for Pianoteq Velocity, Turn off all the Action (the sustain pedal is super loud)
Likes: Sympathetic resonance, listen to recordings easily with different instruments, playability, microscopic file size, velocity meter, the list goes on
Not Likes: from a purely audiophile standpoint, it doesn’t sound like samples, nor acoustic.

I first used Pianoteq in 2007 or so. At that time, it was a cute software that lacked realism. Today it has improved significantly, and version 8.2 has been phenomenal update, for what it is (modeled instrument).

Given the consistent actions by Moddart to improve and update, I predict that by 2030 Pianoteq will sound indistinguishable from sampled instruments. but we’ll see!

That is an interesting thought.

Considering that Pianoteq has no limitations for its beginning wave forms, I'd say it may have a bit of an advantage from the technology standpoint. A piano will always be a piano. But with Pianoteq, there is no piano, it's a blank slate, build the waveform from scratch.

Likes: switch on and play, no drops, cracks, spikes etc. and 192khz with 1,3 ms latency, good playing experience

Likes: fast startup, linux support, generally it complements FP-10 really well
Not Likes: Not really. But I agree that it doesn't sound like high end samples. Example Comparison.

I own version 8.2. I original bought it a couple of versions ago for my wife to use with her Pearl MalletStation, and eventually bought the instrument packs for vibraphones, xylo, and celeste. I also picked up a few piano packs over the years: Bluthner, Bechstein, U4, and Steinway D. I've used it with several controllers over the years; right now I have the Roland RD-2000 and GP609. I don't actually use it a ton though, since I like the built-in Roland sounds well enough. I haven't played with customization at all, but I probably ought to ...
